Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammoplasty)

While large breasts may appear aesthetic and attractive from the outside, for women who possess them, they represent a serious health issue that lowers the quality of life. Breasts that are excessively large relative to body structure (Macromastia/Gigantomasti) due to genetic factors, hormonal imbalances, or weight gain place a heavy physical and psychological burden on a woman.

Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammoplasty) is one of the surgeries with the “highest patient satisfaction” in aesthetic surgery. This is because the operation does not only beautify the patient aesthetically but also lightens them by relieving chronic pain.

End Back Pain and Say Hello to Freedom with Breast Reduction Surgery

Dr. Andan Clinic does not view breast reduction operations merely as a tissue removal process; it applies them as an art form that reshapes, lifts, and brings the breasts into proportion with the body. After the surgery, our patients frequently say, “I wish I had done this years ago; a world of weight has been lifted off my shoulders.”

Health Problems Caused by Large Breasts

Excessively large breasts are not just a problem of finding clothes. They lead to the following physical ailments:

  • Chronic Pain: Neck, back, and shoulder pain. Deep marks left by bra straps on the shoulders (Bra strap groove deformity).

  • Postural Disorders: Risk of hunching (Kyphosis) and spinal curvature due to the center of gravity shifting forward.

  • Skin Problems: Rashes, fungal infections, and bad odors caused by sweating in the inframammary fold (under the breast).

  • Activity Limitation: Difficulty in exercising, inability to run, and decreased mobility.

Breast reduction surgery is both an aesthetic and reconstructive (restorative) surgery that solves all these problems at once.

Surgical Techniques: Where Will the Scars Be?

The fundamental principle in breast reduction surgery is to remove excess breast tissue, fat, and skin, move the nipple (areola) to a higher point where it should be, and lift the breast.

At Dr. Andan Clinic, two main techniques are applied depending on the size of the breast:

  • Lollipop Incision (Vertical): It is shaped like a circle around the nipple and a straight line descending from there. It is preferred for medium-sized breasts. Recovery is faster.

  • Inverted T Incision (Anchor): In very large and excessively sagging breasts, an incision is also required in the inframammary fold to gather the excess skin. The scar resembles an inverted letter T.

Scarring is inevitable; however, these scars fade over time (within 1 year) to match the skin tone and are completely hidden within a bra or bikini. For our patients, these scars remain an insignificant detail compared to achieving a painless and light life.

Nipple Sensation and Breastfeeding Function

The biggest fears of women considering breast reduction are the questions “Will my nipple die?” or “Will I be able to breastfeed again?” Dr. Andan Clinic uses modern techniques that preserve the vessel and nerve stalk (pedicle) that nourishes the nipple (areola). The nipple is moved upward like an island with its own vessels; it is not cut off and discarded. Thus:

  • Nipple sensation and vitality are preserved.

  • Since the vast majority of milk ducts are protected, 70-80% of patients can breastfeed after surgery (However, no guarantee can be given, as it depends on the amount of tissue).

Breast reduction surgery is an act of liberation that lightens the burden of your life. You no longer have to wake up with back pain, hide behind baggy clothes, or deal with rashes. Dr. Andan Clinic aims to increase your quality of life by designing healthier, more upright breasts that are in harmony with your body.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is breast reduction surgery covered by the Social Security Institution?

Aesthetic procedures performed at private clinics (such as Dr. Andan Clinic) are not covered by the Social Security Institution (SGK). However, at university hospitals, if the size of the breasts causes serious skeletal system disorders (as confirmed by a medical board report), the costs may be partially covered.

Contrary to popular belief, breast reduction surgery is much less painful than breast augmentation (as no muscle is cut). Patients feel a great sense of relief when they come out of surgery. Simple painkillers are sufficient.

The removed tissue will not grow back. However, if the patient gains excessive weight after surgery or becomes pregnant, there may be some growth in the breasts. Nevertheless, they will never return to their previous enormous size.

The operation lasts 2-3 hours, and you will stay in hospital overnight. Drains (if any) are removed the following day. You can return to your daily routine after one week. You must wear a special sports bra for 4-6 weeks.

The amount of reduction is determined according to the limits that will not impair blood circulation in the nipple. However, as the aim is to make the patient feel more comfortable, the goal is usually to reduce the size to ideal proportions, such as a B or C cup. Your doctor will recommend the healthiest size for your body proportions.
