The female body is highly sensitive to the changes life brings. Breasts that are firm, full, and upright during youth can lose their form over time due to the inevitable effect of gravity, frequent weight fluctuations, the aging process, and especially after pregnancy and breastfeeding periods.
The emptying of the breast tissue, the loss of skin elasticity, and the downward displacement of the nipple are medically referred to as “Breast Ptosis” (Breast Sagging). This condition can cause a woman to feel physically aged, tired, and aesthetically incomplete.
While many women do not experience issues while wearing a bra, they become unhappy with the image in the mirror when without one. This is where Breast Lift (Mastopexy) surgery comes into play.

There is no muscle tissue inside the breast; it consists of breast tissue, fat tissue, and mammary glands. What holds this structure to the rib cage are ligaments called “Cooper’s Ligaments.” Over time, these ligaments loosen and the skin becomes slack. The degree of sagging (Ptosis) is the most important criterion for surgical planning:
Mild Sagging: The nipple is at the level of the inframammary fold (the crease under the breast).
Moderate Sagging: The nipple has dropped below the fold but is still facing forward.
Advanced (Severe) Sagging: The nipple faces completely downward and has become the lowest point of the breast.
The question that confuses our patients most in this surgery is: “Should I have silicone implants, or is a lift alone enough?” The answer lies in the volume (amount) of your existing breast tissue.
Breast Lift Without Implants (Mastopexy Only): If the amount of tissue you have is sufficient even if the breasts are sagging (i.e., your breasts are large but sagging), you do not need external silicone. Dr. Andan Clinic surgeons gather and shape your own breast tissue (Auto-Prosthesis Technique), lift it, and remove excess skin. As a result, the breast may shrink slightly but takes on a much more upright, conical, and firm form.
Breast Lift with Implants (Augmentation Mastopexy): Generally, if the inside of the breast has completely emptied like a “deflated balloon” after breastfeeding, just stretching the skin will not yield an aesthetic result. The breast will be lifted but will remain small and flat. Upper fullness (cleavage) will not be achieved. In this case, a small-volume Silicone Implant is placed under the muscle while the lifting procedure is performed. Thus, the breast both lifts and gains volume. The cleavage area is revitalized.
Because breast lift surgery requires the removal of excess skin, it is not a scarless surgery. However, Dr. Andan Clinic uses modern techniques that minimize and hide scars. The technique used varies according to the degree of sagging:
Periareolar (Around the Nipple): Used only for very mild sagging. The scar is only around the dark circle (areola).
Vertical (Lollipop) Incision: The most commonly used method. It is in the shape of a single vertical line descending from around the nipple. It is the technique that gives the breast the most beautiful conical shape.
Inverted T (Anchor) Incision: Used for advanced sagging where there is excessive skin. There is also a scar in the inframammary fold, but this scar is hidden as it coincides with where the bra wire sits.
Scars are red in the first months, but within 1 year, they fade to skin color and become indistinct. Alongside the form and self-confidence gained, these scars are acceptable fine lines for our patients.
Breast lift surgery is performed under general anesthesia and takes 2-3 hours.
Hospital Stay: 1 night.
Pain: Contrary to popular belief, it is not a painful surgery. There are mild aches for the first few days.
Corset: A special medical bra is used for 4 weeks.
Social Life: You can return to work within 5-7 days.
Final Shape: Breasts may appear very high and edematous (swollen) at first. Within 2-3 months, the edema subsides, and the breast settles into its natural curve.

In breast lift surgery, the nipple and milk ducts are preserved and lifted as a whole (pedicle-preserving technique). As the milk glands are not damaged, breastfeeding function is preserved at a very high rate (80-90%) after surgery.
Surgery can turn back the clock, but it cannot stop it. Ageing and gravity continue. Nevertheless, your breasts will never return to their pre-operative state. Provided you maintain your weight and do not have another child, the results will last for 10-15 years.
In the first few weeks after surgery, temporary numbness or excessive sensitivity may be experienced in the nipple. This condition improves as the tissue heals and the swelling subsides (within a few months). The risk of permanent loss of sensation is very low.
No. There is no muscle in breast tissue. Exercise (chest exercises) only enlarges the pectoral muscle beneath the breast. This may push the breast forward slightly, but it cannot tighten sagging skin and loosened ligaments. The only treatment for sagging breasts is surgery.
They are technically similar (the scars are the same). However, the aim of breast reduction is to reduce tissue (weight). In breast lift surgery, the aim is to tighten the skin while preserving or increasing volume (with implants).
